Frequently asked questions
What is a fair way to split household costs?
Many households split fixed costs in proportion to income: if one person earns 60% of the combined income, they pay 60% of the costs. That way everyone keeps a similar share of their own income to spend. Pennystead calculates this for you, or splits 50/50 if you prefer.
Is splitting by income better than 50/50?
It depends. With similar incomes, 50/50 is simple and fair. When incomes differ a lot, splitting by income keeps the burden equal relative to what each person earns. You can switch between both with one click.
Can I include yearly costs?
Yes. Mark a cost as yearly and Pennystead spreads it over 12 months, so insurance or taxes paid once a year are counted fairly.
Is my data safe?
Pennystead has no account and no server: your figures are stored only in your own browser. A share link contains your figures, so only share it with people you trust — or hide incomes and names.
Does Pennystead cost anything?
No. Pennystead is free to use, without ads or sign-up.
